Frequently Asked Questions

Installation, Serialization & Activation of CD-ROM & Download Pronunciation Power Products

This is the normal process to serialize and activate CD-ROM or download versions of the Pronunciation Power products.

  1. When Pronunciation Power is ran for the first time, it will ask you to enter your "Serial Number". Enter the serial number that came with the product EXACTLY as shown including the dashes.
  2. You are then asked if you want to "Activate Now"? Click "Yes".
  3. You are then asked to choose an "Activation Method". Click the "ONE-CLICK (internet activation)" button. Activation will happen automatically through the internet.

NOTE: If you buy a new computer or "clean up" your old one by re-installing your operating system, you are removing the information stored on your computer that tells Pronunciation Power that it is already serialized and activated. Pronunciation Power then believes that you are running the product for the first time. This is normal behavior for copy protected software. You are permitted 2 Internet activations when you purchase the product. If you activate more than 2 times through the ONE-CLICK (internet activation) method or if you purchase a new computer or reformat your old one, then you must request an "Activation Code" and explain why you need to activate again, see instructions below.

How to request an "Activation Code" (after your 2 Internet activations have been used up).

  1. Launch your product and if you are prompted to enter your "Serial Number", enter the serial number that came with the product EXACTLY as shown including the dashes.
  2. You will then be asked to "Activate now?", click the "Yes" button.
  3. On the next screen, click the button called "e-mail or Fax" (a form called "PronunciationPower_LIC.html". will be created on your desktop).
  4. You will then be asked "View file now?", click the "Yes" button and the form will appear in your web browser.
  5. Enter your "Email Address" and the "Reason You Need to Re-Activate" into the form.
  6. Click the "Automatically e-mail My Information" button. The information in the form will be sent to ECLI Support.
  7. After ECLI Support receives the information, support will email your new "activation code" back to you.
  8. After you receive the "activation code" from ECLI Support, launch the product and when prompted to "Activate Now", click "Yes" and then click the button that says "Enter Activation Code". Enter the "activation code" EXACTLY as shown including the dashes, that ECLI Support emailed you and you are done.
  9. Activation codes are in place to protect our product from software piracy. Every major computer based product has some sort of security installed, this is not unusual. You will always receive an activation code when you require it, all that is required is to give a reason why it is needed.

Your license agreement allows activation on two computers of your choice for your convenience.

The 15 day countdown means you have 15 days to activate the product after you serialize. If you do not activate after 15 days, the product will run in "Demo" mode until you do activate. You will be able to use the product in full mode indefinitely (or at least until you buy a new computer or in some cases reformat your drive).

Although they look the same, a "Serial Number" and an "Activation Code" are two different numbers with two different purposes.

The first time you run a Pronunciation Power product, there is a two major steps that needs to be completed.

Step 1). Serialization
- Which is done using the serial number you purchased.

Step 2). Activation
- Which is done initially by using the "ONE-CLICK (internet activation)" button, and then, if more activations are needed, with an "Activation Code".

Here is what happens when you run the program for the first time:

  • When Pronunciation Power is ran for the first time, it will ask you to enter your "Serial Number". Enter the serial number that came with the product EXACTLY as shown including the dashes.
  • You are then asked if you want to "Activate Now"? Click "Yes".
  • You are then asked to choose an "Activation Method".

While the legal answer to this question is one, our systems will in fact allow two activation codes to be generated for the same serial number. This is for your convenience in the event you wish to move the software to a different system or have the software installed on a laptop as well. Please note that if the two initial activations allowed are used during this process, then you will need to request an "Activation Code".

Pronunciation Power CD-ROMs can be copied to and ran from your hard drive if you have enough hard disk space to do so.

Windows users can follow these steps:

  1. Create a new folder in your "Program Files" folder on your "C:\" drive (or other drive where there is enough room) and name the new folder "Pronunciation Power".
  2. Created another new folder inside the new "Pronunciation Power" folder and name it "8 in 1 English Dictionary", "Pronunciation Power 1" or "Pronunciation Power 2" depending which product you are going to copy.
  3. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer. If it automatically starts the program, wait for the program to launch and then quit the program.
  4. At the desktop go to "My Computer" (choose "My Computer" from the "Start" menu).
  5. Right-click on the CD-ROM icon of the Pronunciation Power product and choose "Explore". A window showing the contents of the CD-ROM will appear.
  6. Select all the files from the CD-ROM by hitting "Ctrl-a" on your keyboard (this is the same as choosing "Select All" from the Edit menu).
  7. Drag the selected files from the CD-ROM into the new folder you created in step 2. Copying will start.
  8. After all the files have copied, open the folder with the copied files and double-click the program icon (the one with the .exe extension).

Note:

- You may want to make a shortcut of the .exe and place it on your desktop for easy access.

- Downloadable versions of the Pronunciation Power products can be downloaded and installed using their built-in installer. If you prefer to do this instead of copying the CD-ROM to your hard disk, contact ECLI support and we will give you the download locations.

Macintosh users can follow these steps:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer.
  2. Copy the Pronunciation Power program from the CD-ROM into the Applications folder on your Macintosh HD.

Follow the directions below to activate a computer that has no Internet access.

  1. On your computer with no Internet access, launch the product and when prompted to enter your "Serial Number", enter the "Serial Number" that came with your product EXACTLY as shown including the dashes and numbers.
  2. You will then be asked to "Activate now?", click the "Yes" button.
  3. On the next screen, click the button called "email or Fax" (a form called "PronunciationPower_LIC.html" will be created on your desktop).
  4. You will then be asked "View file now?", click the "Yes" button and the form will appear in your web browser.
  5. On a piece of paper, write down or print the "Serial Number" and the "Computer Number" that will appear on the top of the form.
  6. Take the "Serial Number" and "Computer Number" to a computer that has Internet access and send the two numbers to ECLI Support in an email at: ecliactivate@shaw.ca
  7. After ECLI Support receives the two numbers, they will email you an "Activation Code". Write or print this "Activation Code" down on a piece of paper (be sure to write it EXACTLY as shown including the capital letters, numbers and dashes).
  8. Take the "Activation Code" home, launch the product again on your home computer and when prompted to "Activate Now", click "Yes" and then click the button that says "Enter Activation Code". Enter the "Activation Code" that ECLI Support emailed you (be sure to enter it EXACTLY as shown including the capital letters, numbers and dashes) and activation will occur.
  9. NOTE: If you reformat your computer or purchase a new computer, you will need to do this process again.

When a Pronunciation Power product is ran for the first time its asks you enter your serial number. The "OK" button will not enable until you have completely entered a valid serial number (including the dashes). If you were emailed your serial number, we recommend you use "copy and paste" to paste the serial number into the field just to make sure you are entering it correctly. If the "OK" button does not enable then there is something wrong with the way the it is entered.

Please ensure you are NOT doing any of the following:

  1. Entering the serial number without the dashes.
  2. Entering the serial number with "o's" instead of zeros.
  3. Entering the serial number of a different product which will not work.
  4. Entering an activation code instead of a serial number. Although they look the same, they are very different.

Follow these steps to get your products installed on your server with the intent to serve them from there to your remote workstations (without having the products installed on each workstations):

  1. Download the installers for each product from these urls (it's easier to use these installers instead of copying the contents of the CDs). Please contact ECLI Support for download locations.
  2. Run the downloaded installers on your server and follow the instructions.
  3. After installing a Pronunciation Power product on a server, all the files of the product needed to be "locked" (read only) in order for multiple users to run it simultaneously (if the files are not locked then "file in use" errors will result).

Follow these steps to lock all the Pronunciation Power files on your server:

    1. Locate the folder on your server that contains the Pronunciation Power 1 program. (typically located at: "C:\Program Files\Pronunciation Power\")
    2. Right-click the Pronunciation Power 1 folder and choose "Properties"
    3. In the Attributes at the bottom of the Properties dialog, check-on the "Read-only" checkbox
    4. A "Confirm Attribute Changes" message will appear. Ensure the "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" radio button is on, then click OK.
    5. Follow the same procedures for any other Pronunciation Power products you may have.
  4. Each remote computer will need a shortcut to the two products that exist only on the server. Typically the shortcut is created by going to the remote computer, mount the server volume that contains the program, locate the ProPow1.exe (and ProPow2.exe) files and make a shortcuts of them and place those shortcuts onto the desktop of the remote computer. You may have other ways of doing this but essentially the remote computers need a way to boot the program from the server's hard drive through the network. Basically, the server is used like an external hard disk.
  5. The programs will need to be "Serialized" and "Activated" on each remote computer. For each product, boot (from the server) the two programs on each remote computer.
  6. When you are asked to enter the "Serial Number", enter the number you received when you purchased the product. Be sure to enter the serial number EXACTLY as shown including the capital letters, numbers and dashes. You will then be asked if you want to "Activate Now"? Click "Yes". You will then asked to choose an "Activation Method". Click the "ONE-CLICK INTERNET ACTIVATION" button and activation will happen automatically through the internet.
  7. In the scenario above, the assumption is made that you want to run the products from the server to the remote workstations. If that is not your intent, you can run the installers on each work station (or on a master workstation you plan to clone). Either way, keep in mind that activation occurs on each workstation regardless. So even after cloning, you will still need to activate on each work station. We can make activation easy for you by adding activation counts on our side for each of your serial numbers. Keep in mind that you will have to supply proof of purchase before the activations can be added, then you can simply use the ONE-CLICK INTERNET ACTIVATION" button when it comes time to activate them.

If you have a site license for Pronunciation Power, you can copy it onto your LAN server and have your remote workstations run it from the server through the network. After installing Pronunciation Power on your server, all the files of the product needed to be "locked" (read only) in order for multiple users to run it simultaneously (if the files are not locked then "file in use" errors will result).

Follow these steps to lock all the Pronunciation Power files on your Windows-based server:

  1. Locate the folder on your server that contains the Pronunciation Power program. (typically located at: "C:\Program Files\Pronunciation Power\")
  2. Right-click the Pronunciation Power folder and choose "Properties"
  3. In the Attributes at the bottom of the Properties dialog, check-on the "Read-only" checkbox
  4. A "Confirm Attribute Changes" message will appear. Ensure the "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" radio button is on, then click OK
  5. Do the same for any other PP product you have

Follow these steps to lock all the Pronunciation Power files on your Macintosh-based server:

  1. From the Utilities folder, launch the program called Terminal.
  2. In terminal type the following:

    chflags -R uchg
(note: ensure there is a space following the unchg)

  3. Drag the icon of the Pronunciation Power application into the Terminal window and drop it immediately after the "unchg ". This will cause its path to show.

Example of what you should see: chflags -R uchg /Applications/Pronunciation\ Power\ 1.app

  4. Hit the return/enter key.
  5. Quit the Terminal app. Now all the files within the application are locked and ready for sharing from your server. As part of your license agreement, you must insure this file does not go beyond the single install on your server.

Learning Tutorials & Manuals

S.T.A.I.R exercises are designed to give students a chance to practice the sound patterns of North American English - Stress, Timing, Articulation, Intonation and Rhythm.

S.T.A.I.R topics use the individual sounds of the lessons to practice the patterns present in an English accent. We have chosen 15 key topics that can assist students in developing a more English sounding accent. Exercises for practicing the topic can be found within the lessons themselves.

Students do not have to read or understand the manual to be able to do the S.T.A.I.R exercises as the screen displays tips and instructions for students. The manual is directed toward English instructors and a through knowledge of English is required to use it.

The S.T.A.I.R. manual is located within the Pronunciation Power 2 program. To see it, do the following:

  1. Launch the Pronunciation Power 2 program
  2. On the bottom of the main screen, click the button called "Instructions"
  3. On the instructions menu screen, click the menu item called "S.T.A.I.R - Stress, Timing, Articulation, Intonation and Rhythm"
  4. On the right side of the screen, click the button called "S.T.A.I.R Manual"

Technical Information

We struggled initially with the various choices of symbols to use: IPA common, IPA used in Australia and China ( some slightly different symbols), Americanist Phonetic Notations (APN) symbols, or a combination of the first three. Different dictionaries, ESL texts, linguists and teachers seem to use slightly different symbols as well focusing on the different sound blends which gives us anywhere from the 44 to 56 "sounds" for the English language.

Working closely with the Linguistic department of the University, the choice of symbols was deliberate and was motivated by the feeling that learning the phonetic alphabet is often an unnecessary task for most learners of English - and one which may even impede (or at least interfere with) their progress.

Note that we have, on the top right hand corner, used the symbol of the sound that the student is studying on each page. The user may click on that symbol at any time to be reminded of the sound they are working on. Also, the program features the "toggle" button where the student can highlight the sound that they are working on in all of the words, thus helping them recognize the various ways that certain sounds may be spelled.

For Windows, it is common for CD-ROMs to automatically start a program when its inserted. This is normally the way the Pronunciation Power CD-ROMs behave. Perhaps your Windows settings were changed to stop this from happening. You might also have security software on your computer that is preventing the auto-start from happening. You can manually start the program by following the steps below.

To manually start the program on the CD-ROM, follow the steps below:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer.
  2. Click the "Start" menu and choose "My Computer".
  3. Right-click on the icon of the Pronunciation Power CD-ROM and choose "Explore". The contents of the CD-ROM will appear.
  4. Double-click the program file with ".exe" extension (such as "ProPow1.exe").

Note: You may want to make a shortcut of the .exe program file and place it on your desktop for easy access next time. Versions of all of our Pronunciation Power products can be downloaded from "English Computerized Learning Inc." and installed onto your hard disk so the CD-ROM will no longer be required. If you prefer to do this, contact ECLI Support and we will give you the URL to the download page.

Internet Explorer has certain security settings that are intended to prevent malicious programs from harming your computer. The Introductory English Grammar and Vocabulary product is a series of html pages that need to run inside your browser. It's like running a web site from your hard drive. Internet Explorer sometimes considers that a threat. To stop Internet Explorer from continuously prompting you for permission follow the three steps below:

To allow any website to run scripts and ActiveX controls on your computer:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then, in the Settings list, scroll down to the Security section.
  3. Select the Allow active content to run in files on My Computer check box, and then click OK.

Note: the text above was taken directly from Internet Explorer's "Help" file. To see these steps there, open Internet Explorer and choose "Contents and Index" from the "Help" menu (if you do not see the menu bar, hit the "Alt" key once). Once the "Help" window is open, click the "Index" tab and type "ActiveX", then click the heading "active content and ActiveX controls".

What you should know about active content:

Active content (for example, things like stock tickers, video, or animation) can enhance your browsing experience. It relies on either ActiveX controls or computer code (called a script) to work properly.

ActiveX controls can sometimes malfunction or display content that you don’t want. They can also be used to collect information from your computer without your permission, damage information on your computer, install software without your consent, or allow someone else to control your computer remotely. Given these risks, you should only install these programs if you completely trust the publisher.

When you encounter a web page (or insert a CD) that is trying to run active content on your computer, you should receive a message prompting you to decide whether you want to allow the content to run. If you are certain that you want to allow the active content, click Yes in the message box. By clicking Yes, you allow the active content to run on the web page or CD you’re viewing on that occasion. If you leave the page and return to it later, you will receive the message again. You can avoid being prompted every time by allowing any website to run scripts and ActiveX controls, however you should be extremely careful about doing this, as it might put your computer at risk for malicious software.

If you are concerned about changing this setting in Internet Explorer you can open the "Start Introductory English.html" with a different web browser such as Mozilla's Firefox (see http://www.mozilla.com)

Windows (2000, XP, Vista, 7)

Pronunciation Power has been updated in February 2010 to be compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7 however if you have the 64bit versions of those, the Speech Analysis (waveform plotting) feature of Pronunciation Power will not work. This is a known issue that we will be attempting to fix in a future release. In the meantime, contact us and we will send you a patch that removes the Speech Analysis.
